What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to a person before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas do not provide medical care but complement the work of healthcare professionals.
2
What does a Doula do?
We offer support in various forms, including:
-
Emotional support: Offering reassurance, encouragement, and a calming presence.
-
Physical support: Providing comfort measures such as massage, positioning advice, and breathing techniques.
-
Informational support: Helping parents understand their birth options, providing information on the birth process, and answering questions.

What is the difference between a Midwife and a Doula?
A midwife is a trained medical professional who manages the birth process, provides medical care, and handles emergencies. A doula, on the other hand, provides non-medical support and focuses on the emotional and physical well-being of the birthing person.
4
When should I hire a doula?
It’s best to hire a doula as early as possible to ensure they are available to care for you around your due date. However, you can hire one at any point in your pregnancy, even in the later stages.
5
What happens during prenatal visits with a Doula?
Our prenatal visits usually involve discussing your birth preferences, going over your birth plan, addressing concerns or questions you may have, practicing comfort measures for labor, and helping prepare for the 4th Trimester (postpartum). These visits are also a great time to just connect and build relationship.
6
Can a doula support me if I plan to have an epidural or use pain medications?
Yes! We are there to support your birth choices, whether you want pain relief or prefer to manage without it. We can help you navigate the process, assist with comfort techniques, and provide emotional support regardless of your pain management plan.
7
Will a doula support me if I have a C-section?
Yes! We support you no matter what type of birth you plan, including cesarean. We can help you prepare for the possibility, offer emotional support before and after the procedure. Oftentimes, you can only have one support person in the OR with you; so, your doula will typically be waiting for you in the recovery room where she can continue offering support when your procedure is done.
8
What if my labor is very long or happens unexpectedly?
We are available to support you during the entire labor process, including long or unexpected labors. We offer continuous support, meaning we stay with you through the duration of labor. In the event of a longer labor, we have access to backup doulas on the Flat River Doulas Team who can step in if needed.
9
How does a doula work with my birth team?
We work alongside your healthcare team, including your doctor or midwife, to ensure your emotional and physical needs are met. We are there to support you and help create a positive birth experience, without interfering with medical care.
